Looking ahead to 2026, one thing the government won’t be doing is appointing a citizens’ assembly to consider changing the voting system to one that’s more proportional. It was a recommendation made in late November by the Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform.
Proportional representation does the opposite. It gives MPs and voters real alternatives, which forces parties to listen instead of taking support for granted.
Proportional representation shifts power back to voters across the country and limits the ability of parties to win majorities with shrinking support. It strengthens accountability and reduces regional divisions.
This could take place over 3 months then at the end of it we could decide the winner. I would love to test out the mechanics of the electoral systems and see how they pay out in results. Remember no electoral system is perfect.
An e-petition will require 5 citizens/residents and an MP to be created. Once it is approved the petition can start collecting signatures. A minimum of 500 signatures is required to have the petition presented to the House of Commons.
