If you maintain or use open-source projects on GitHub, you might have noticed that embedded star history charts (api.star-history.com) in README.md files broke recently. That’s because Github killed the API they relied on, citing high costs because people used it a lot. Well done microslop (they even broke their own UI because they forgot to update their frontend).
Hugging Face crawls as many GitHub repositories as it can with the help of the Software Heritage Archive so as to create their Stack v2 LLM for code.
And of course without consent of rights holders.
The irony here is that GitHub, a centralized service, is built on top of git, a version control system that was designed by Linus Torvalds to be fully decentralized. I can’t read Torvalds mind, but I’m pretty sure that GitHub was not what he had in mind when he was developing git to support Linux kernel development.
