Explanation: In the medieval period, there were actually several attempts to recreate flight in the manner of birds. One early supposed experiment was by the polymath Abbas ibn Firnas in Muslim-ruled Spain:
It’s not certain whether this was an actual occurrence (nor if the experiment was quite as successful as suggested), as it was only noted in full detail centuries after the event.
I mean, imagine even successfully being able to glide back in the day and no one believing you
I’m pretty sure there were probably lots of people who tried to fly or had ideas for actually flying all throughout history … even ancient history. The only problem is that no one remembers any of them because they all got killed or died trying.
The story of Icarus is like 3000 years old, about building artificial wings for flight. So the “flying is for birds only” was questioned quite early
I remember one medieval innovator of a similar sort jumping off the city walls and breaking his legs with his ‘flight suit’.
I imagine many unrecorded mishaps of this type must have occurred before that…
Albrecht Berblinger
Came to mention the Tailor of Ulm, but you beat me to it.
But did you know there’s a bridge in Cordoba named after him?
How cool is that?
