Nothing like the Christmas present of a dead autocrat!

Watching the country burst into celebration was amazing.

I vividly remember watching an old man holding one of those official state portraits of Ceausescu, smiling, and spitting in Ceausescu’s face, over and over and over.

God that must have been cathartic

I had friends in elementary school who were born in Romania and adopted by an American family. I was too young at the time to understand the implication. In hindsight I have so many questions I wish I could have asked them. I’ve since lost contact with them, but I hope they’re doing well and I hope they stayed in touch with their cultural heritage.

That was one of the very few occasions when I was genuinely happy to hear somebody had died.
