The bones of the fallen English soldiers at the Battle of Waterloo were sold as fertilizer, a new study has suggested.

The study, which was published June 17, nearly 207 years to the day after the epic battle on June 18, 1815, suggests that it is “most probable” that the bones of fallen Battle of Waterloo soldiers were sold as fertilizer.

This practice also led to an editorial observation in The London Observer in 1822, which claimed that the farmers were indebted to their children’s bones. The article also stated that Great Britain should have sent out more troops to Europe so they could, in turn, “fatten” their soil.
