Would we call them “male musicians” if they were all men?

Depends on the gender norms of music in their society. In any case, the position here is to highlight the recording of women in historical media, whereas underrepresentation in historical media was the norm before the modern day.

In Japan, women actually were historically well represented when it came to performing music. Certainly in the upper classes, anyway.

My point was more about photography and ethnography more generally capturing mostly male experiences in the 19th and most of the 20th century.

I understand. I just don’t agree in this instance. Comes across as more of the typical painting male as the norm.

Does it really matter in tiny instances like this? Maybe, maybe not.
