TBF, it’s easier to fight for freedom when you literally just have to join your country’s regular military (even if it’s still a feat to do it as a trans man in the 19th century) …
It’s pretty inspiring how people on several different occasions apparently discovered his sex (birth gender?) but chose to keep it to themselves.
Interesting. I’ve often wondered over the years why when I joined the military they required all us ladies to stand shoulder to shoulder in a line in our bras & panties and each go through a battery of physical tests, perhaps one of the things they were checking was to make sure we were indeed females.Rather than males pretending to be females.

To my mind, that just goes to show how very important standing institutions are for rallying people to a cause. Things seem so much less hopeless when there’s a clear, functioning institution that can be joined in action with - like a national military, or a labor union.
